Our Pollarding Process

Our arborists begin with a site assessment to evaluate the tree’s species, age, health and structure. Not all trees are suitable candidates — pollarding works best when started on younger trees and maintained on a regular cycle. Attempting to pollard a mature tree that has never been managed this way carries a real risk of stress, disease and structural failure, and we will always advise honestly if we believe the work is not appropriate for the tree. Once the work is confirmed, we remove the upper branches back to the established pollard head — or establish a new one — making clean, considered cuts that minimise the wound surface area and reduce the risk of decay. All green waste is removed from site on completion. We recommend returning on a cycle of every 2 to 5 years to keep growth manageable and the tree in good health. We are also experienced in crown reductions and tree pruning where pollarding is not the right solution.

When Is Pollarding the Right Choice?

Pollarding is most commonly used to control the size of a tree in a confined space — particularly in urban gardens, near buildings, along roads and beneath power lines. It is a recognised method for extending a tree’s lifespan by reducing the weight of the canopy and stimulating vigorous new growth. Species that respond well include willow, lime, London plane, elder and poplar. Where a tree is protected by a TPO, pollarding may still be permitted but requires prior consent — we handle all of this on your behalf. If you are unsure whether pollarding is the right approach, our team is happy to provide qualified, honest advice. In some cases a tree removal or a crown reduction may be a more suitable long-term solution, and we will always recommend what is best for your tree and your property.

Pollarding Surrey - Frequently Asked Questions

Pollarding is the removal of all upper branches to encourage dense new growth from the top of the trunk. When carried out correctly and repeatedly from an early stage, it is a sustainable management technique used for centuries on species like willow, lime and London plane.

Species that respond well to pollarding include willow, lime, London plane, elder, oak and poplar. We assess your tree before recommending this approach as not all species tolerate it.

Typically every 2–5 years depending on the species and the size of growth you want to maintain. We can set up a regular maintenance schedule for you.

Pollarding an established tree that has never been pollarded before carries a higher risk of failure or disease. We assess the tree’s age, health and species before advising whether it is suitable.

If the tree has a TPO or is in a conservation area, you need consent or must give notice before carrying out pollarding work. Qualitree check and manage this process on your behalf.

Pollarding costs in Surrey typically range from around £150 for a small tree to £600 or more for large specimens requiring access equipment. The final price depends on tree size, species, site access and whether green waste removal is included.
