Tree Felling Methods We Use

The two main methods of tree removal are:

Straight Tree Felling

The simplest type of felling is straight tree felling. Our operatives will make an initial cut at the base of the trunk to determine the direction of the fall, and then make a felling cut to ensure it is felled in one go. This is ideal for quick and effective felling where the tree is in an open area and there is no risk to property or public safety.

Dismantling a.k.a. Sectional Tree Felling

For more complicated jobs, section felling involves safely dismantling a tree by cutting it into manageable sections and lowering them with ropes and slings into a suitable landing zone. We will start by cutting off all the branches and then taking off large limbs from the top down, before moving onto the trunk. This technique is best used when the space around your tree is limited.

Crane-Assisted Tree Removal

For trees in exceptionally restricted spaces — near buildings, over roofs, or alongside boundaries — we use crane-assisted removal techniques. This involves using specialist lifting equipment to raise and lower sections of the tree with precision, eliminating any risk of sections falling on nearby structures. This method is particularly common in urban Surrey gardens where space is extremely limited.

When Is Tree Felling Necessary?

Not every problem tree needs to come down. At Qualitree we always assess whether a tree can be saved through crown reduction or pruning before recommending removal. That said, there are situations where felling is the only safe or practical option:

Dead or Dying Trees

Dead or dying trees pose an increasing structural risk as wood deteriorates — a dead tree can fail without warning, particularly in high winds. Decay often starts internally and isn’t visible from the outside, which is why a professional assessment is important. If there’s any doubt about a tree’s structural integrity, early removal is always safer and cheaper than emergency work after a failure.

Disease or pest damage

Disease or pest damage that is too advanced to treat through pruning or intervention, including fungal decay, honey fungus, or significant pest infestation. In some cases a diseased tree also poses a risk to surrounding healthy trees, making prompt removal the responsible choice. We can advise on whether treatment is still viable or whether felling is the right course of action.

Storm or lightning damage

Storm or lightning damage that has structurally compromised the tree beyond safe retention. Even if a storm-damaged tree appears mostly intact, internal splits and root disturbance can make it unpredictable. Our emergency tree work service covers urgent storm damage assessments and same-week removal where needed.

Root Damage To Foundations Or Pipes

Root damage to foundations or pipes — where roots are actively causing subsidence, lifting paving, or damaging drainage, removal combined with stump grinding is usually the only permanent solution. Simply cutting a tree down without removing the stump and root plate won’t stop root activity in all cases, so we assess each situation individually.

Wrong location

Trees planted too close to buildings, boundaries or utilities that are now causing ongoing problems with light, structural encroachment or neighbour disputes. This is more common than people realise, particularly with fast-growing species like leylandii, willow and poplar. We’ll assess the situation honestly and discuss all options before recommending removal.

We’ll always give you an honest assessment and only recommend felling when it’s genuinely necessary.

Choosing the right tree surgeon for a felling job matters. A poorly planned fell can damage fences, buildings and neighbouring trees — or put the team at risk. Our team hold NPTC chainsaw and felling certificates and carry £5 million public liability insurance, so you’re fully protected throughout. We work cleanly and efficiently, removing all timber, brash and debris from your site on the day. Frequently Asked Questions

Tree felling costs vary depending on the size of the tree, access to the site, and how the timber needs to be removed. Small trees typically start from around £200-£300. Large or complex trees requiring sectional dismantling can range from £600-£1,500+. We provide a free no-obligation quote after visiting the site — call us on 0203 902 0618.

If your tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a Conservation Area, you will need permission from your local council before any felling work can take place. Qualitree carries out TPO and conservation area checks on your behalf and handles all council applications, so you don’t need to do anything. We can usually confirm your tree’s status within 24 hours of enquiry.

We chip all branches and smaller wood on site using our wood chipper. Larger sections of trunk can be left for you as firewood if you’d like them, or we remove everything and leave the site completely clear. If you’re thinking about replanting, we also offer a tree planting service and can advise on suitable species for your garden.

Tree felling carries inherent risks which is why it should only be carried out by trained, qualified professionals. Before any work begins, our team conducts a full site risk assessment — identifying hazards, planning the felling direction, and establishing a safe exclusion zone. We use specialist rigging equipment, ropes and slings for controlled sectional work, and always protect fences, lawns and structures with appropriate matting and coverings.

A straightforward fell of a small to medium tree typically takes 2-4 hours including clearance. Larger trees requiring sectional dismantling can take a full day. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when we visit to quote, so you know exactly what to expect.

Yes — this is one of our specialities. We regularly fell trees in tight Surrey gardens where there’s limited space and structures nearby. In these situations we use sectional dismantling, carefully lowering each section in a controlled manner using ropes and rigging rather than letting anything fall freely. We’ll assess the site before quoting and recommend the safest approach.
