Extensive Ivy Removal at St Andrew’s Church, Earlsfield
Project Overview & Approach
Specialist Ivy Removal
We recently completed specialist ivy removal and vegetation management works for the Diocese of Southwark as part of their ongoing property maintenance programme across a number of Church of England buildings, including sites near Wandsworth Common and Wimbledon Park. The project itself took place at St Andrew’s Church in Earlsfield, a historic church property with extensive ivy growth affecting large sections of the building exterior and roof structure.
Over several decades, the ivy had steadily spread across the vestry and surrounding elevations, eventually covering significant portions of the church. While ivy is often considered visually appealing, unmanaged growth can lead to serious complications for older buildings, particularly where historic brickwork, slate roofing, and traditional mortar are present. By the time work began, the vegetation had penetrated recessed stained glass window areas, worked beneath slate tiles, wrapped around the ridge line, and embedded itself deep into mortar joints across the roof structure.
Careful Removal and Long Term Vegetation Control
Due to the age and nature of the property, the removal process had to be carried out carefully to avoid unnecessary damage to the church fabric. Our team systematically removed the ivy growth in sections, ensuring vulnerable areas such as the stained glass windows and roof edges were protected throughout the works. Particular care was required around the roof hip areas and slate detailing where roots and tendrils had become deeply embedded over many years.
Following removal, we carried out ecoplug treatment on the remaining ivy stumps to prevent regrowth. Ecoplugging is a localised vegetation control method where specialist plugs are inserted directly into the stump after drilling into the cambium layer. The cambium layer is responsible for transporting nutrients through the plant, allowing the treatment to work effectively throughout the remaining root system while minimising impact on surrounding vegetation and the wider environment.
Safe Access Solutions for Historic Church Buildings
To allow safe access across the church elevations and roof areas, we instructed Romans Scaffolding to install the required scaffold system for the project. Their team carried out an efficient and professional installation which enabled safe working access across all affected sections of the building. Based in London, they provide scaffolding services throughout the surrounding areas and played an important role in the smooth delivery of the project.
The completed works formed part of the Diocese of Southwark’s wider commitment to maintaining and protecting historic church properties for the future. By removing decades of invasive ivy growth and implementing long term vegetation control measures, the project has helped preserve the condition and structural integrity of St Andrew’s Church while supporting ongoing maintenance plans for the site.

Considering Professional Ivy Removal?
Uncontrolled ivy growth can quickly become a serious issue for older and historic buildings, particularly where masonry, roofing, and traditional mortar are involved. While ivy is often seen as attractive, when left unmanaged it can spread into rooflines, guttering, window recesses, and brick joints, leading to hidden damage over time. Professional ivy removal is the safest and most effective way to protect your property while preserving the condition of the structure beneath. Careful removal techniques are especially important on churches, heritage buildings, and period properties where aggressive removal methods can cause unnecessary damage.
One of the key benefits of specialist ivy management is the ability to control growth without impacting surrounding areas or important architectural features. Every property presents different challenges, from ivy embedded into mortar joints to growth spreading beneath roof tiles and around delicate windows. Using safe and controlled methods, ivy can be removed systematically while reducing the risk of structural deterioration and future regrowth. Treatments such as ecoplugging also provide a long-term solution by targeting the root system directly without widespread chemical application.
At our company, we take pride in delivering careful and professional ivy removal services for historic, residential, and commercial properties. From the initial site assessment through to vegetation treatment and final clearance, every stage is carried out with attention to detail, safety, and respect for the building itself.
